Andy Powers, Master Guitar Designer alla Taylor Guitars:

“The Lucchi velocity meter has become a valuable tool at my workbench. Using it to quantify the characteristics of comparable woods has been beneficial in developing designs that maximize potential of my materials as well as identify new capabilities of alternate materials.”

Read More

Assessing Tone Wood Using the Lucchi Meter

by Julian Hersh – www.darntonhersh.com           posted on  http://soundpostonline.com/archives/340/

Francois Xavier Tourte and Dominique Pecatte never used a Lucchi meter. In fact it was not until the late 20th Century that the first Lucchi meter was developed. Today however, the Lucchi meter has become so ubiquitous that the pricing of bow blanks is directly tied into the Lucchi meter reading. So what is this device and how does it work?

Lucchi Meter

Designed in 1983, the Lucchi meter is an ultrasonic tester designed to measure the acoustical characteristics of a piece of wood. Specifically it measures the time needed for sound waves to traverse the material. This information can then be used to determine the elasticity of the wood, as well as its sound quality. The following equation represents how a measurement of the elasticity of a material can be obtained:Elasticity = (velocity)2 x density  …Read more…
